Penang has three climbing gyms on Climb Go Where, all run by Project Rock. Project Rock Gurney Plaza in George Town has bouldering and top rope walls, while the Bayana Hub gym in Bayan Lepas and the IKEA Batu Kawan gym on the mainland add lead climbing and auto-belays.

An adult day pass is RM42, with online early-bird passes including gear from RM33.70. Bayana Hub lists passes from RM22.50. All three gyms run intro classes and hire out gear, so you can turn up without shoes or a harness.

If you are new to roped climbing, book an intro session first, as you will need to show you can belay safely before climbing with a partner. The auto-belay walls at Bayana Hub and Batu Kawan let you climb on ropes on your own.
