Malaysia has 17 climbing venues on Climb Go Where: 13 in the Kuala Lumpur area, three in Penang and one in Johor Bahru. Camp5 is the largest chain, with rope-and-boulder gyms at 1Utama, KL Eco City, KL East, Jumpa & Beastpark and Paradigm Mall in Johor Bahru, plus a bouldering gym at Utropolis in Shah Alam. In Penang, Project Rock runs three gyms at Gurney Plaza, Bayan Lepas and IKEA Batu Kawan.
Bouldering-only options in the Klang Valley include BUMP Bouldering at Bukit Jalil and Jaya One, Boulder Story in Damansara Jaya and BHub Bouldering in Petaling Jaya. Bolder Ventures in Subang Jaya and Batuu Climbing in Damansara Utama add rope walls. Prices compare well with the rest of the region: Camp5 day passes are RM42 off-peak and RM56 peak, Boulder Story is RM39 and Bolder Ventures starts at RM25 if you bring your own gear.
For outdoor rock, the limestone crags behind Batu Caves are a short drive from the city. Gua Damai Extreme Park and MIR Adventures run guided top rope sessions from RM180, and climbers at Damai pay a small permit fee. Go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat, and expect afternoon storms in the wetter months.
